We have been working on our Teach the Class the End of the Aztecs project for 2 days now. You will have two periods on Tuesday and two on Wednesday to make your poster and prepare a presentation about you topic. Presentations will occur on Thursday!!!!

Today we worked on our Oral Interpretation of a poem. Mrs. Scott must hear you read the poem (somehow) by the end of class on Tuesday, May 23.

Your Codex is also due on Tuesday, May 23.

There will be a chapter 7 and 8 test on Wednesday, May 24. On Tuesday we will watch a video about the Aztecs to help us review for the quiz. The study guide for the quiz is below. A paper copy WILL NOT be handed out.

Aztec Chapter 7 and 8 Review List
You need to know and understand the following topics for your chapter 7 and 8 test. The test will take place on Wednesday, May 24. On the test there are 15 multiple choice questions and a two paragraph response.

Things to know:

  • ·         PEC paragraph format (Intro, Evidence, Explain, Evidence, Explain, Evidence, Explain, Conclusion)
  •       Role of Geography (what aspects of geography were important to the Aztecs and how do you know this?)
  • ·         Aztecs manipulation (changing) of geography in order to expand their society
  • ·         Importance of Gods in their society
  • ·         Religious ritual of human sacrifice
  • ·         Use of slavery in Aztec Empire
  • ·         Stop! If you are reading this study guide, you have just come across a very important HINT for the test. The written component will require you to compare the Aztec hierarchy to EITHER the Japanese feudal system or Medieval feudal system. You should review one of the previously learned social hierarchies in order to compare it to the Aztec one. Okay… now continue to study the Aztecs!

Today we worked on a booklet (using the textbook) about the way that "types of thinking" changed during the Renaissance - thinking about science, math, astronomy, medicine etc.. This booklet must be completed for Thursday. We will review tomorrow and then begin a partner project.

Today we finished our PEC paragraphs about Internal and External Forces. These were all handed in during class time. The rest of the class time was set aside to study for the chapter 12, 13, 14 test that will be on Monday, December 5.

After the test on Monday, we will be starting to watch "The Last Samurai". If your permission letter is not brought in on Monday those who do not have it in will not be permitted to watch the movie.

Today we presented our speeches. We also completed an internal and external forces chart about Japan and started our third PEC paragraph based on this chart. Students should be using the feedback from the first two PECs in order to make this one better.

Today we worked on creating questions based on the facts we gathered about Edo Japan based on the picture analysis. Your job this weekend is to finish answering the questions you wrote with possible answers, on your Lotus Diagram. Next up we will learn how to write a PEC paragraph and use our Lotus Diagrams with this.

Also homework this weekend: ensuring that over the course of the week you have gone on read theory for at least 1 hour.

                          Topics to include: Stoic (stoicism), Rice, Island (isolation), Beliefs (gods), Weather                                (beauties and dangers), self-sufficiency, homogenous, ainu, climate
3. All 6 Folklore stations (booklet stapled in visual journal, Paul Bunyan visual journal page and station 6 recording sent to Mrs. Scott) Instructions for each station can be found below. If you needed a reading you were told to take it from the envelope before leaving the room today. You should be able to Google it if you did not get it.

Station 1: Fairy tales
1.     Choose a Fairy Tale from the choices below. Try to choose one you are familiar with.
a.     Cinderella (Short Length Story)
b.    Snow White (Short Length Story)
c.     The Little Mermaid  (Long Story)
d.    Beauty and the Beast (Medium Length Story)
e.     The Snow Queen (Frozen)  (Long Story)

2.    Go on YouTube and watch 2-3 clips from the Disney version of the movie. Gain an understanding of the story line, overall tone and feeling of the movie.

3.    Read the original version of the story. You can find the readings in this package. Ask Mrs. Scott for technology to help have the story read to you.

4.    Complete a Venn diagram, recognizing the similarities and differences between the two stories. Use the following guiding questions in order to identify similarities and differences:
a.     Are the characters similar? Do they behave the same? How is their behaviour similar or different?
b.     Find the rising action, climax and falling action. Is it similar? How does it differ?

c.      What is the overall tone of the stories? Is it similar or different?


       Station 2: Myths
Myths are defined as: Stories about how the world came to be. Characters are usually Gods or Creators.
Every culture and belief system has myths about how they feel the world came to be.
1.    Watch the Japanese Creation Myth.

3.    Answer the Worldview questions based on information you gathered from the myths.

Station 3: Fables
Fables are defined as: Stories that teach a lesson or a moral.
1.    Read the Japanese Fable “The Stonecutter”.
2.    Complete the reflection in your booklet.

   Station 5:
1.    Watch the Tall Tale of Paul Bunyan (famous American literary character). The video is in two parts.



Station 4: Legends
1.    Read the historical Japanese legend about the sea around Japan. (Funa Yurei)
2.    Read one of the Urban legends: Walt Disney on Ice, Bigfoot or Alligators in the Sewer.
3.    After reading the two legends: discuss with your group the following concepts:
a.     How did these legends come to be?
b.    Why do some people believe the legends are true while other people believe they are made up?
4.    Complete the attached reflection, analysing the validity of legends.

Station 5: Tall Tales
2.    Watch the Tall Tale of Paul Bunyan (famous American literary character). The video is in two parts.

3.    Create a creative visual journal page (in your Visual Journal) that expresses the importance of this Tall Tale to American society. Your journal page must include:   
·         One entirely filled page
·         There must be colour, pictures, words and symbols. (no long paragraphs of writing).
·         Use the Art Supplies in the cupboard (paint, pastels, fabric, different colour paper, stamps etc…)

4.    Use the following guiding questions to create your page. An answer to each question should be easily identifiable on your page.
a.     What is the meaning of the story?
b.    Why do tall tales exist?
c.     What does this tall tale say about American society?
d.    What is it about Paul Bunyan that American people like in order for them to keep telling his story?

Station 6: Folktales

You are going to create an oral interpretation of a famous folktale (with a twist).
1.     Choose a folktale:
a.     The Three Little Pigs               
b.     Goldilocks and the Three Bears
c.      Little Red Riding Hood

2.     You are going to re-write the story from the perspective of a character within the story.
a.     Example: Telling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as if you are telling it from Baby Bears point of view:
                                                              i.      “Mama, Papa and I were coming home from a lovely walk in the woods. Suddenly we noticed that the front door of our home was open! Uh oh! I hope no one ate my porridge….”

3.     You must re-write a script for your chosen story. All the main events of the story must be included but from the perspective of your chosen character.

DO NOT JUST RE-WRITE THE ORIGINAL VERSION ONLY CHANGING A COUPLE WORDS. THINK ABOUT HOW YOUR CHOSEN CHARACTER WOULD ACT, WHAT THEY WOULD THINK AND SAY!!  IF YOU JUST READ THE ORIGINAL WITH DIFFERENT WORDS, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DO IT AGAIN.

4.     After you create a script, you are going to record an ORAL RECORDING of it. Practice reading your version. Remember, voice, tone and attitude are VERY important. No mono-tone! This is like acting, not just reading!

5.     Record yourself telling the story and send the recording to Mrs. Scott (tjscott@educbe.ca)
You can find free voice recording software online. 

6.     Attach your script to your Folklore Stations booklet.

If you forgot the stories at school, you can google them and they should be easy to find online. Remember, you have to figure out which of the 6 story types it is and explain why it is that type.

Tomorrow is Character Day so we will not have humanities. The Worldview quiz will be on Monday, September 26. The quiz will have some multiple choice, some matching and 3 short answer questions. If you need any help please see Mrs. Scott on Thursday or Monday morning before school. The main study material is the Worldview booklet.

Reminder: Please bring in your fieldtrip forms and money. We still need one parent volunteer for our class!

Tuesday, September 20
Today we finished up the Worldview elements! I am not here tomorrow so please bring your worldview booklet to help do some studying for your upcoming quiz. The quiz will be on Monday!  If you need help, please see me before then!

Monday, September 19
Today we worked on the last 3 Worldview elements, Beliefs, Economy and Knowledge. If you did not finish these 3 they are due tomorrow. We will complete the last page of the Worldview booklet tomorrow together as a class. The entire booklet (except for the last page) should be done for tomorrow. We will review as a class.

Reminder: There will be a worldview quiz (based on the worldview booklet) next Monday. Field trip forms need to be handed in as well.

Friday, September 16
We had a great time at the pancake breakfast this morning. I highly recommend reviewing the work we have done this week in your Worldview booklet. We will continue with Beliefs and the remainder of the booklet next week.  Happy Weekend!

Thursday, September 15
Today we continued to look at worldview. We reviewed the first two elements, Time and Geography and we went over Society and Values. Tomorrow we will review these two and work on Beliefs. No homework!

Wednesday, September 14
Today we continued our look at Worldview. We will continue to work on this tomorrow! No homework!

Tuesday, September 13
Today we started working on learning about Worldview. We will be continuing this work over the next week. There is no homework for this evening.

Monday, September 12
Today we took out library books and started our every other day silent reading time. Please remember to bring your book on Mondays and Wednesdays. We also completed a Worldview questionnaire and had a class discussion.

Friday, September 9
Hello and welcome to Hum 8!  This week we worked on Graffiti name plates. These are due on Monday, September 12. Please complete this weekend.
